Nursery and primary to Year 2
Reptiles are fascinating creatures which tend to rouse mixed feelings of curiosity and dread. If we fear reptiles, it’s usually because either we believe they present a real danger or we share the general sense of revulsion expressed by society.
The aim of this workshop from the ‘Museum comes to you’ is to demystify reptiles so that they inspire feelings of caution and admiration rather than fear and repulsion.
The diversity of their shapes and sizes and biological solutions they have adopted to adapt to a range of habitats make them all the more interesting. For older participants, the workshop begins with a discussion about our individual responsibility to protect species.
The workshop revolves around five profiles of ‘reptile’: the lizard, tortoise, cayman, snake and chameleon. They each display incredible features in terms of their physical appearance and behaviour. The activity ends with a guessing game which is a chance to go back over some of the ideas covered and get acquainted with other reptiles such as the monitor lizard.
To end the workshop, children, dressed up as tortoises, lizards or snakes, will be asked to mime the way their chosen animal moves. Get your cameras ready! To calm the children down before they leave, the facilitator reads a selection of funny stories featuring our reptile friends.
Workshop aims:
- Describe and get to know tortoises, lizards, snakes, chameleons and crocodiles in more detail
- Understand how they feed, move, reproduce and behave
- Listen to a story and learn some new words
During the workshop, the facilitator will present a slideshow and a selection of the Museum of Bordeaux collections including a host of stuffed specimens. Children will also get to work with learning resources specially devised or assembled for the session.
