Primary from Year 2 to Year 6
What is a bird? After answering the question with the help of the facilitator and the selection of specimens presented, the workshop will continue with one of the following three themes (decided by the teacher): birdsong, beaks and legs, and bird ringing.
Children will learn to identify the song of different birds that are probably familiar to them and learn why birds sing in the first place. Birdsong is composed of complex and often harmonious melodies. Male birds generally do the singing, to attract females or mark their territory.
The variety of specimens observed will illustrate how remarkably adaptive beaks are to the type of food they eat and legs are to their habitat. Birds have a varied diet from insects and seeds to fruit, fish and small mammals. The size and form of a bird’s beak is generally suited to the type of food they ingest.
With reference to a slideshow and various learning resources, the facilitator will explain about bird ringing and the scientific interest in monitoring populations subject to environmental and climatic changes. Each ring contains a unique number and information used to identify the centre where the ring was engraved. Ringing is a scientific activity that is used to monitor birds individually, which is not possible by observing and counting alone.

- Learn about their diet, reproduction, movement and behaviour
- Learn to recognise common birds and learn some new words
During the workshop, the facilitator will present a slideshow and a selection from the Museum of Bordeaux collections including a host of stuffed specimens, eggs and feathers. Participants will also play a bird song listening game and use learning resources specially devised for the workshop.
