Grelier collection

Yvan Grelier

Yvan Grelier is an amateur entomologist, a former member of the Société Linnéenne de Bordeaux (Bordeaux Linnaeus Society). It is specialised in butterflies, and established a large collection of Rhopalocera and Heterocera bringing together 1,400 species, from France and neighbouring countries.

He is the author of a catalogue of Lepidoptera in Gironde, which was published in 1989 in the Société Linnéenne de Bordeaux Bulletin that can be consulted on the BHL portal.

The Yvan Grelier collection

This collection is remarkable for the very large number of moths, a group often neglected as it is not as spectacular and attractive for collectors than butterflies. However there are more of them and they are more diversified.

The specimens are classified in specific level and by sex. The collection is documented by date and collection space.

This collection includes numerous observation data over a long period that will be shortly be incorporated in the Rhopalocera and Zygaena Atlas on the scale of Aquitaine coordinated by the Aquitaine Natural Spaces Conservatory.

Acquisition of the collection

The Museum of Bordeaux acquired this collection by in 2012 through a manual donation from Yvan Grelier.

As soon as it was acquired, the Grelier collection joined the Collections Conservation Centre.

The collection inventory 

Yvan Grelier listed the names of the species in his collection in a notebook.

The Museum of Bordeaux team started the computerised inventory of the collection from the year after it was received.
